Specialist learning and teaching

Subject and vocational teachers in the learning and skills sector operate within the context of dual professionalism and stay at the forefront of their specialism whilst developing their skills in teaching and supporting learning.

Strategies such as industrial secondments, regular interaction with local employer communities and membership of professional bodies can provide firsthand knowledge.  Peer and community networks such as the Subject Learning Coach networks provide invaluable opportunities for teachers to share knowledge and approaches.

Teachers can also learn by:

  • listening to and observing their learners in work placements
  • using their adult learners’ knowledge of work and drawing on their experiences
  • researching and creating work-related learning materials.

You might use the resources in this area to stimulate ideas about how interaction with learners and colleagues can refresh and maintain a teacher’s specialist knowledge.
