Specialist mentoring and coaching
Research shows that coaching is a very effective approach. It is more powerful than staff training sessions and the coaching approach is central to the design of the Teaching and Learning Programme.
If you are a Subject Learning Coach or an Advanced Learning Coach, you are a champion of change within your organisation. Your role is to refresh approaches to teaching and training, and to help to inspire and motivate teachers, trainers and learners. You have a crucial role in promoting the new knowledge and skills acquired through the programme, the subject coaching networks, and the teaching and learning resources. Working in your own organisation with individuals or groups, you are able to raise the standard of teaching and learning in the subject areas by using the expertise, coaching and other skills developed during the programme.
The same principles apply in initial teacher education where, if you are a teacher educator, you will be aware that trainees will get the most from their course by having a mentor or coach who supports their professional development. Similarly, many qualified teachers benefit from the guidance and encouragement a mentor or coach offers, especially when tackling new challenges or taking on increased responsibilities.
The resources in this area give you some examples and ideas about putting coaching and mentoring approaches into practice. We provide links to the Subject Learning Coach Programme where you can find out more about becoming an Advanced or Subject Learning Coach and information about the Professional Training Programme for coaches.
