Making the most of your specialist area

Teachers have a responsibility for enthusing learners in their chosen subject or vocational area and for looking for appropriate and innovative ways to motivate learners and fire their ambitions.

Teachers can plan activities that bring their learners into direct contact with the world of work, getting them to investigate their chosen area and planning work-related learning experiences.  They can also bring learning to life in the classroom or workshop by:

  • creating virtual work settings through which they can teach specialist knowledge and skills
  • creating ‘employer challenges’ to present learners with real situations that require them to understand a work context and solve problems
  • creating case studies and role-play scenarios to engage learners in realistic contexts
  • creating resources that give learners an insight into what the world of work holds for them.

Creating up to date and realistic learning contexts is one way in which teachers can also keep themselves updated with current knowledge in their specialist areas.

The resources in this section provide examples of these approaches that you can adapt for a range of specialist areas.

The resources in the Teaching and Learning Programme are rich with examples of how teachers have brought their specialisms to life through innovative approaches.

Refer to Applied learning and work-related learning for more ideas and resources on this theme.
