Specialist learning and teaching

Teachers ensure that their knowledge of their own specialist subject or vocational area is up to date. They use a varied and appropriate mix of learning and teaching strategies to enthuse, motivate and engage learners with their specialist area and to provide support that meets individual needs.

They are committed to:

  • understanding and keeping up to date with current knowledge in respect of their own specialist area
  • enthusing and motivating learners in their own specialist area
  • fulfilling the statutory responsibilities associated with their own specialist area of teaching
  • developing effective practice in teaching their own specialist area.

(From LLUK’s New overarching professional standards for teachers, tutors and trainers in the lifelong learning sector.)

In this section you will find resources from the Teaching and Learning Programme that you can use to support initial teacher education and professional development in these areas.
