Embedding LLN and ICT in a specialist area


Learners develop essential skills in literacy, language, numeracy (LLN) and information and communication technology (ICT) more successfully when they are embedded in their subject or vocational area. 

When specialist teachers in Skills for Life or functional skills work with teachers in subject and vocational areas to plan learning, both learners and teachers benefit. At the same time, learners need to be aware of the skills they need to develop to succeed in their specialist areas.

The resources in this area give examples of activities that:

  • help learners understand the importance of developing LLN, ICT and other transferable skills
  • help learners, teachers and work placement supervisors to plan work experience that integrates skill areas
  • help teachers plan a continuing professional development (CPD) programme to embed LLN and ICT skills
  • illustrate learner activities with dual learning objectives – vocational and LLN
  • introduce and help learners learn specialist terminology
  • illustrate the benefits of teachers working together to teach Mathematics in context.
