Learning about learners
By listening to what learners have to say about their aspirations and their needs, teachers can identify and address potential barriers to successful learning. ‘Know your learners’ is a useful principle to follow.
Learning can be a daunting prospect, particularly if you are starting something new or difficult or if you have experienced failure in the past. Many learners are reticent to discuss their experiences of learning and have low expectations of any future success. Resources in this section illustrate how some teachers have encouraged learners to talk about their experiences, hopes and expectations and how this process has helped both them and their learners.
Use the resources in this section to:
- stimulate discussion between colleagues
- identify and address challenges
- hear what learners find exciting and motivating about learning
- explore challenges that some learners face and find ideas on how to use this information to plan meaningful and relevant individual programmes.
You will find more ideas and resources relevant to this theme in Supporting effective learning.
