Planning for teaching and learning

Teachers need to plan coherent and inclusive learning programmes that meet learners’ needs and curriculum requirements and lead to further education or training and employment. It is frequently the case that learners’ programmes involve several professionals including:

  • a team of subject teachers
  • employers and work placement supervisors
  • specialist teachers for literacy, language and numeracy (LLN)
  • teachers from more than one provider working together in collaborative partnerships.

At the same time, teachers may work in relatively isolated conditions, in community education settings or prisons, for example.

Additional challenges for teachers planning learning programmes include:

  • meeting and supporting learners’ individual needs
  • meeting the requirements of awarding bodies
  • planning for relevance
  • planning to embed cross-curricular themes and LLN
  • planning effective work placement programmes
  • including learners in the planning of their programmes
  • planning for variety and learning in multiple environments.

Use the resources in this section to plan and implement creative professional development programmes to meet particular needs.
