Learner voice
Learner voice is about listening to learners, involving them in reviewing and planning learning and in developing the learning organisation.
Creating opportunities for learners to provide meaningful feedback is a fundamental part of a learner involvement strategy. It helps to shape the services offered to learners. In the context of the expert learner, learner voice activities are more specifically focused on involving learners in evaluating their experiences of learning and in providing feedback on what works for them. Involving them in this way helps to develop their awareness of how they learn best and of what they need to do in order to achieve their goals.
There are three main benefits to implementing an effective learner involvement strategy:
- Learners provide you with invaluable insights to help improve practice.
- Learners become committed to the development of their learning organisation which fosters a sense of pride and belonging.
- Helping learners to find their voice and talk about their progress also gives them confidence in their ability to succeed.
Here you will find a handbook from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) which aims to address those areas that all providers should consider when developing their learner involvement strategy. It provides a framework that is both practical and sufficiently flexible to accommodate the circumstances of diverse providers.
Since November 2006, the National Learner Panel has been advising the government on how proposed changes in the learning and skills sector in England will affect learners. The Panel is made up of volunteers involved in the learning and skills sector as learners. You can find out more by visiting the site: www.direct.gov.uk/nationallearnerpanel
