Engaging learners

Learners’ motivation for learning comes from a number of drivers, and teachers will use their talents and skills to maintain enthusiasm and enjoyment in the learning process.

In terms of planning, there are a number of key factors that can engage learners, for example:

  • using learning that is relevant to the learners’ interests and ambitions
  • using active learning techniques and employing a variety of effective pedagogies
  • enriching vocational learning by learning in real working environments
  • enabling learners to plan aspects of their learning programmes and to review and evaluate these
  • offering learners the opportunity to learn in a variety of environments and to negotiate where they learn
  • encouraging teachers to harness technology and allow their learners to use a wide range of media.

Look at the resources in Learning and teaching for a range of ideas about effective teaching and learning approaches.

Visit the eCPD website to participate in a community of practice based around harnessing technology in learning.

The resources here can help teacher educators introduce aspects of planning learning that engage learners in the process together with an effective example of a series of active learning sessions with industrial relevance.
