Adapting and modifying learning plans

The theme here is listening to learner feedback, observing their progress and adapting or modifying learning plans accordingly. The challenge for teachers is to be prepared to modify their plans.

It takes some confidence on the part of the teacher to ‘let go’ and involve learners in planning their programme of work. At Newcastle College, learners took on responsibility for creating the Scheme of Work. Their initial uncertainty about this responsibility was soon followed by enthusiasm for how much they could learn together with the minimum of intervention from their teachers. The video: Giving responsibility to learners explores what learners and teachers gained from the experience. This illustrates the challenges and advantages of learner-centred approaches and the need for flexibility.

You will find resources to support the adaptation and modification of individual learning plans in Assessment for learning.
