Effective teaching and learning: The 10 pedagogies
The term ‘active learning’ has been refined in the Teaching and Learning Programme resources to embrace 10 key pedagogy approaches that we know can make a positive impact on the learners' experience.
These 10 approaches, underpinned by evidence from research and from teachers' and learners' experiences, have been shown to be particularly effective in supporting learning, helping learners to move from surface learning to deep and profound understanding. The 10 pedagogy approaches are generic and can be applied to any curriculum area or subject.
The video and the card activity Talking teaching, training and learning provide an accessible introduction to the 10 pedagogies, and the downloadable booklet provides ideas for how to get the most out of the activity.
To explore the 10 pedagogies in more depth, explore the 10 Quick start guides which explain how and why the approaches work, and offer quick, practical ideas for using them in teaching. The Quick start guides also include research references and links for more in-depth research into the approaches.
Some of the pedagogies have been amplified further by focusing on teaching strategies developed in particular subject areas. The pedagogy toolkits have been developed to help teachers develop the ideas in their own contexts and can be easily adapted to any subject or vocational area or learning context.
