Applied learning and work-related learning
Work-related learning is relevant and important for learners at all ages and stages. It forms a key element of many 14 –19 programmes and hence is currently a hot topic with which many organisations and teachers are grappling. Learners also find work-related learning motivational.
You might use the videos Work projects that work and Theory into practice to consider how work-related and project-led learning can:
- enable development of project management skills
- promote personal learning and thinking skills
- enthuse employers and mentors to support learners
- stretch and challenge learners
- develop a range of work-related skills.
The two videos in the Virtual work settings show one way that teachers have incorporated work-related learning into their practice. Consider how this approach enables learners to:
- explore job roles and organisational structures
- practise communication and employability skills including customer care and enterprise
- relate theory to practice
- develop knowledge of professional practice
- carry out assessments and devise care plans.
Other resources address some of the challenges teachers face in making the most of work-related learning and helping learners to develop employability skills.
- Which skills do learners need to be ready for the workplace?
- How can teachers help learners to recognise the employability skills they need to develop and use?
- How does experiential learning and learning in the affective domain come into play?
- How can teachers embed a work-related dimension into programmes?
