Who are your learners?

Effective equality, diversity and inclusion strategies and policies are based on meaningful dialogue with learners. By listening to what learners have to say about their aspirations and their needs, teachers can identify and address potential barriers to successful learning. ‘Know your learners’ is a useful principle to follow.

High expectations for learners underpin success for all. Use the resources as part of a teacher education programme or other professional development to stimulate discussion around the challenges of raising learners’ aspirations.

  • Hear what learners find exciting about learning.
  • Explore barriers faced by some learners and how to use this information to plan meaningful and relevant individual programmes.

Evaluate how equality, diversity and inclusion issues are addressed in your organisation and what actions you might take to create an inclusive learning and teaching environment.
