Professional practice
A teaching workforce should aim to reflect the diversity of the population it serves. People from groups that are under-represented in teacher education and recruitment need encouragement and support to join the profession.
Similarly, teachers must know how to make their lessons inclusive and open to all learners. Being aware of the potential barriers to learning and the signs of discrimination, and knowing how to challenge assumptions in a positive way, all contribute to an inclusive learning approach.
Providers have to meet the legislative requirements associated with equal opportunities, both as employers and as providers of publicly funded training. The law prohibits discrimination against people on the grounds of sex, marital and civil partnership status, gender reassignment, race, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age.
Teachers need to be well prepared and have up-to-date information about aspects of equal opportunities in the workplace. A useful source of information is ACAS, the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service.
