Differentiation
There is no single definition of differentiation, but all definitions are underpinned by a view of learners as individuals. Some approaches concentrate on planning sessions so that individual learners’ needs are accommodated. Others see differentiation as a philosophy guiding the whole of the learning journey, including guidance and support.
Teacher educators and others might use these resources as part of professional development programmes to:
- develop a shared understanding of differentiation
- identify and share practical strategies to use in teaching to make learning more accessible to all.
Resources include videos, continuing professional development (CPD) activities and information sheets that illustrate teachers using differentiated practice in a range of subjects and settings. The principles are relevant for any subject or vocational area.
Choosing and using resources that match individuals’ reading levels is a particularly important aspect of differentiation. The resource Supporting Skills for Life: Using readability can help teachers assess the suitability of the learning resources that they already use and those that they plan to create themselves. It also suggests simple ways that teachers can help learners to develop their literacy skills.
