Information, advice and guidance
Information, advice and guidance (IAG) is an essential stage in creating an individual learning programme. Teachers, working alongside IAG professionals, have an essential role in helping the learner to raise their aspirations and consider options that may be outside their initial thinking. Learners can be supported to think about their opportunities for progression in the widest possible context, for example, by exploring the variety of jobs available in order to find a focus for their learning programme.
An effective IAG process, where learners are actively engaged, helps them develop the skills and characteristics associated with the expert learner.
Approaches for effective IAG should be varied and will be individualised to learners’ needs.
You can see IAG in action by watching the Paths to employment and Moving forward videos which show a range of adult learners considering the learning and employment routes open to them. The footage shows different approaches to supporting learners to make the right decisions in order to progress to further learning or employment. The approaches shown in the videos take into account the needs of:
- adults who are long-term unemployed and may have different IAG needs to those of younger learners
- learners with learning difficulties and disabilities who require different IAG support which helps them to progress to appropriate destinations.
Quality Standards for Young People’s IAG have been written to support the development of consistently high quality and impartial IAG services across the country. These standards apply not only to IAG professionals but to learning providers including schools, colleges and work-based training providers and other organisations providing IAG support to young people aged 11–19.
