Access and progression

Teachers in the lifelong learning sector support their learners throughout the learner journey.

They are committed to:

  • encouraging learners to seek initial and further learning opportunities and to use services within the organisation
  • providing support for learners within the boundaries of the teacher role
  • maintaining their own professional knowledge in order to provide information on opportunities for progression in their own specialist area
  • a multi-agency approach to supporting development and progression opportunities for learners.

(From LLUK’s New overarching professional standards for teachers, tutors and trainers in the lifelong learning sector.)

Key themes in access and progression throughout the learner journey are:

  • working with partners to provide effective information, advice and guidance
  • involving learners as partners in identifying their learning needs and opportunities
  • supporting learners to persist with their learning and achieve their goals

encouraging progression to further education, training and/or employment and supporting transition.

In this section you will find resources from the Teaching and Learning Programme that you can use to support initial teacher education and professional development in these areas.
